at the white house is that timeline for troop withdraw. i can tell you that we don't expect president obama to announce actual numbers when he addresses the nation during a joint news conference a little bit later on this afternoon along with afghan president hamid karzai, but the question is how many troops will remain after 2014? for the very first time this week the white house signalled that the president was open to having a zero troop presence in afghanistan after 2014. a lot of people wondering if they're just saying that as a bargaining chip or if the president is actually considering that. some commanders have suggested that the troops remain at a level of 6,000 to 15,000. right now there are 66,000 troops in afghanistan. either way, alex, it appears as though the white house is leaning toward a more scaled back troop presence after that date. now, the white house feels it's emboldened by what they are calling a weakened presence of al qaeda operatives. also, they're taking budget considerations into their thoughts here while they're trying to work through this, but the criticism i
by the white house and afghan president karzai during karzai's current visit to washington. the obama administration has reportedly set its expectations low for passage of a new assault weapons ban in congress despite a change in national consciousness in the aftermath of last month's newtown shooting massacre. the new york times is reporting the white house has decided it will be exceedingly difficult for the ban to make it to president obama's desk, leading administration aides to develop other gun control rules that would draw bi-partisan support. the alternatives include universal background checks, more government research on gun violence. the white house is also reportedly considering a $50 million effort to fund the placement of hundreds of police officers and new surveillance equipment in public schools, a move that would resemble the national rifle association's call for armed guards in every school. news of the proposals comes as vice-president joe biden hosted gun industry representatives at the white house on thursday as part of his ongoing task force on u.s. gun violence.
